Harald Haas: Wireless data from every light bulb

What if every light bulb in the world could also transmit data? At TEDGlobal, Harald Haas demonstrates, for the first time, a device that could do exactly that. By flickering the light from a single LED, a change too quick for the human eye to detect, he can transmit far more data than a cellular tower — and do it in a way that’s more efficient, secure and widespread.

Bad presentation. I got it in the last 30 seconds. It’s is amazing but he doesn’t actually translate his knowledge into lamens terms at all. Demonstration was ok but it was just a start. But then he’s a techy. Once a good communicator gets involved then they will shock the world. (still want studies on data collection)

I would have to hear analysis on recieve/transmit. It seems more secure not less. It seems cleaner. No broadcast waves. Study it. Yes. But I think this is good stuff.

I must confess that I agree with the above. Where technology has become available, it has also been used for the policing and control of people. That being said, I’m guessing that most of our information is already available for use by the powers that be. And, as Nick Begich tells us – elsewhere on the Conscious Media Network – current technology around information exchange (ie:cellphones, etc.) could be physically harmful to us. It therefore behooves us to continue exploring new methods knowing full well that a given technology is used for many purposes.

What remains a curious yet less explored topic, though, is how technology is at least as much an artifact of underlying philosophy as it is an artifact of science. What do our technologies say about what we truly believe is important. Or what we believe is true…

Despite the fact that early all of the internet reaction to this technology is positive, every intuitive alarm I have is blaring over the potential for abuse of this new system. If a transmission can be sent through the light over my desk, or bed, or dining room table as it proposes to be between cars, or from traffic lights to police departments, (very Orwellian)then why is no one discussing the obvious use of such technology to receive and transmit even more personal information from inside the privacy of our homes?

If it is true that cell phones can transmit data even when turned off and smart meters continually sent data about which appliances we are using, then would altered LEDs be able to pick up data even when the transmission to our homes is shut off?

I’m also curious about the potential for transmitting unintended signals which are harmful to our bodies and our mental function. We already live in a fog of radio waves and electrical impulses that impact our health.
