New Bill gives US military right to detain citizens

A new bill quietly introduced by congress last week is causing quite a stir among civil liberties groups. The brainchild of senators John McCain and Joe Lieberman, the bill would give the United States government the power to indefinitely detain terror suspects without charge or trial. It would also allow the government to interrogate them for the intelligence value and it doesnt make a distinction between US citizens and non-citizens.

Notably, it states that “an individual who is suspected of being an unprivileged enemy belligerent shall not, during interrogation under this subsection, be provided the statement required by Miranda v. Arizona (384 U.S. 436 (1966)) or otherwise be informed of any rights that the individual may or may not have to counsel or to remain silent consistent with Miranda v. Arizona.” This means that your Miranda rights are gone if you are suspected of being an enemy combatant.

This is almost like watching prophecy unfold. So many wise and aware people have alerted us to how events are likely to unfold, yet it’s still scary to see it happening in real time. This is a prelude to freedom of speech going away. Who’d have thought it possible?!
